AAH SPA MOMENT:

At the Oasis

Back in 2006, the Jalousie Plantation in Soufriere, was a resort slowly beginning to decay in the shadows of St. Lucia’s magnificent twin volcanic mountains known as the Pitons. Jalousie had been undergoing extensive renovations, including plans to expand its spa. While reporting on this expansion, I visited the Rainforest Oasis located high above the valley and was coaxed into experiencing a new treatment exclusive to the resort called Hot Rock Energy Balancing Treatment. The treatment was so new in fact that it was not yet listed on the menu and had only been tested on a few individuals. "You’re our first journalist," said Katie Alexander, Oasis’ former manager. The Hot Rock Energy Balancing Treatment was originally designed by Alexander "to awaken all the senses of the body, mind and soul."

The treatment utilizes rocks collected by the dive team, found in "secret areas" of the ocean and are infused with minerals from sea algae and sulphuric particles. Though the stones are placed upon the chakras (energy centers of the body), the treatment is not to be confused with a hot stone massage, Alexander told me at the time, adding that the effects are unique to each individual. Five different organic, essential oils are used during the treatment. Each oil is intended for a specific area of the body and is applied with light, rhythmic strokes. Then the smooth rocks gathered from the ocean floor are placed on the chakras.

After 30 minutes, I was left alone in the dark room. Frankly, I was used to being pounded to a pulp in traditional massage, so I was not impressed. I was thinking this is nothing. That is, until I felt the sensation that I was floating above the massage table. At first I was a bit disconcerted, but I decided to enjoy the moment. Twenty psychedelic minutes later, my therapist returned. She gave me a few instructions–get rest, drink plenty of water, no alcohol, and don’t jump into the hot tub (so that the essential oils can continue to work their magic).

When she left to get me a glass of water, I closed my eyes again. I saw an image of myself flying over the val des pitons, soaring high above lush, green treetops. Now, that’s a spa experience!

This treatment is currently listed on the Rainforest Oasis menu as Signature Mind and Body Restoration and now also includes reflexology.
